We arrived in Edinburgh late Tuesday night which gave us all day Wednesday to explore the city. We were staying on the edge of the Old Town, so everything that we wanted to see and do was walk-able.
First up on our to-do list was Holyrood Palace. Holyrood Palace is home to the British Monarch of Scotland and also where the Queen resides during her annual one-week summer holiday in Scotland.
After walking around Holyrood Palace, we walked up the Royal Mile towards Edinburgh Castle. Edinburgh Castle is a huge fortress located on the top of Castle Rock. It dominates the Edinburgh skyline and offers beautiful views of the city. We arrived at the the Castle just in time to see the one o'clock daily canyon gun firing. The Edinburgh Castle is quite expansive, it took us a couple of hours to make our way through and we didn't even see all the exhibits.
After a quick bite, and a couple of pints, we headed back to our hotel located on the edge of the Old and New Town. The New Town sits above the Old Town of Edinburgh so to get back to our hotel we had a bit of a climb.
And as if the climb to get up the New Town wasn't enough, my mom suggested we walk up Calton Hill as a final stop before heading to the hotel. My dad and I weren't keen on it initially but once we got to the top, the view of the city with the castle in the distance on one side and the North Sea on the other side was worth it.
That evening we enjoyed a modern Scottish meal at the Scran and the Scallie and went to bed immediately after to make sure that we'd be on time for our train to St. Andrew's in the morning.
